KASTURI DAS MEMORIAL LECTURE SERIES
Smt Kasturi Das, President of the Governing Body of Maheshtala College for two consecutive terms, was no ordinary political leader and Member of Legislative Assembly of West Bengal; she was a true leader of the masses, a mother-figure to all of Maheshtala, a relentless and tireless fighter for the upliftment of the downtrodden and harbinger of faith, love and hope to the poor, simple people of her area.
For Maheshtala College, she was a unique rock-solid support-system, a loving guardian to all stake-holders of the college and a smiling messiah who personally supervised all developmental work. To commemorate her humungous contribution to the people of Maheshtala and to remind future generations of her noble soul’s singular pursuit of progress, the Kasturi Das Memorial Lecture Series was started by Maheshtala College, to be delivered every year on the Foundation Day of the College by an expert from the industry or a distinguished scholar from academia.
At her untimely demise on Feb 2018, the college lost an ardent admirer of academics, a benevolent benefactor and a beacon of hope. We believe our tribute to her shall be our steadfast continuance of her work-mission in the college emulating her indefatigable zeal and enthusiasm, and the illuminating ideas that the Lecture series shall disseminate and enrich her most loved children of Maheshtala College.
The First Kasturi Das Memorial Lecture was delivered by Sri Dhrubajyoti Pramanik, Deputy Editor of Zee 24 Ghanta News Channel, who spoke on ‘Future Media’. He began by paying a glowing tribute to Madam Kasturi Das applauding her amazing personality that cut across all political and communal barriers and upheld love, empathy and humanity. His one and half hour long lecture was animated by his spontaneous oratory that was well-researched and well-endowed by his references to the past and present media- systems
The Second Kasturi Das Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr Biswajit Roy, Professor in Bengali, Visva Bharati, noted scholar and author. Dr Roy paid homage to Smt. Kasturi Das by highlighting her unparalleled contribution to the welfare of Maheshtala. He spoke on Gandhiji’s writings as representation of her altruistic beliefs and how relevant his philosophy is in today;s world. Dr Roy’s effortless eloquence and his in-depth study of the Gandhian literary corpus mesmerised the audience.
